What is an AI coding agent?
An AI coding agent is software that uses a large language model (LLM) to carry out programming tasks for you. Instead of only suggesting the next line, it reads your project, plans the work, edits files, runs commands and tests, and reports what it did.
AI coding agent vs. autocomplete vs. chat
Developers now meet AI in three forms. Autocomplete suggests code inline while you type. AI chat answers questions in a separate window and leaves copying and testing to you. An AI coding agent takes a goal such as "add input validation to the signup form", works across several files, runs your tests and repeats until the result passes or it needs your decision.
How an AI coding agent works
Most agents follow the same loop, which AlphaCode runs in your terminal:
- Understand: search and read the relevant files with tools such as regex and AST search.
- Plan: break the goal into steps and choose a model for each.
- Act: edit files and run shell commands, tests or a browser through built-in tools.
- Verify: read test output, self-review the diff and fix problems.
- Hand back: show you the changes so you can accept, reject or continue.
What you can use an AI coding agent for
- Fixing bugs and failing tests
- Refactoring and migrating code, including large jobs split across parallel agents in AlphaCode's swarm mode
- Writing tests and documentation
- Automating Firefox and desktop apps for end-to-end checks
- Calling external tools through MCP servers
Why choose a free, open-source, terminal AI agent?
A terminal agent fits the way many developers already work: it runs over SSH, inside tmux and in CI-style environments, and it is easy to script. AlphaCode is MIT-licensed and written in Rust, so you can read the code, and it includes a free built-in AI provider so you can start without an API key. When you want a specific model you can connect Claude, GPT, Gemini, DeepSeek, Mistral or a local model through Ollama or LM Studio.
Using an AI coding agent safely
Keep your work in version control, read each diff before accepting it and keep secrets out of prompts and shared files. An agent may send task context to the active model provider, so review that provider's privacy terms. The documentation explains AlphaCode's safety model in detail.
Get started in a minute
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/dragonked2/alphacode/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
alphacode doctor
alphacode
On Windows, use the PowerShell installer shown in the install section. Then open a project and describe your first task.
AI coding agent FAQ
Is an AI coding agent the same as GitHub Copilot or ChatGPT?
Not exactly. Autocomplete tools suggest code as you type and chat assistants answer questions in a window. An AI coding agent goes further: it can read your repository, edit several files, run commands and tests, and iterate until the task works, usually asking before risky steps.
Do I need to pay or bring an API key to try an AI coding agent?
With AlphaCode you do not. It ships with a free built-in AI provider so the first task works right after install. You can add a Claude, GPT, Gemini or local Ollama model later if you want a specific one.
Is it safe to let an AI agent edit my code?
Treat it like a fast junior colleague: work inside version control, read every diff before accepting it, and keep secrets out of files and prompts. AlphaCode uses safeguards for selected destructive operations and prompts before risky actions, but you remain responsible for reviewing changes.
Which programming languages does an AI coding agent support?
The agent works through a language model plus tools such as file editing, regex and AST search and your own test commands, so it can work with most popular languages. Quality depends on the model you choose and on how clearly you describe the task.
